Best Coast: Travels in the Great American West

This project will be continually updated as I travel around the American West. It's a region that I've grown to love since I first visited in 2008. The Grand Canyon is my absolute favorite place in the world. The 11 states that make up the West — Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming — have some of the most breathtaking natural features in the world. They have 30 of the country's 59 National Parks. They account for nearly 75 percent of National Forest acreage, totaling roughly 140 million acres of land. It's diverse in its landscape: from snow-capped mountains in the Rockies to barren desert in parts of the Southwest. It's also culturally diverse with its many Native American tribes and political ideologies that range from ultra authoritarians to anarchist libertarians. To me, Route 66 and the open road in the mid-20th century is true Americana. The idea that continuous freedom is just a tank of gas away. The West is still wild.
